Like many we wanted to produce grapes, and like many that dream seemed to always end up in disappointment, as the grapes would come on and seem to just dry up before they matured. We did the typical 4 x4 post with wire strung between them, but after the first few years when the grapes were really starting to take off the post were crooked, the wire was sagging and no matter what we did the vines always ended up touching the ground.

In touring the Amish country we began noticing one more step they use in supporting their grapes. They use the post and wire, but they take one additional step. At about 54” high they run a solid pipe through the post and drill through and bolt it at each post.
When we moved to Texas we decided to take that next step and built our new support using three post set so that we could run a 20’ 1-1/2” galvanized chain link fence top rail through the post. This meant we had to subtract 4” off each end of the 20’ so that the pole would go from end to end, with one post in the center. Before we set the post we wedged them plum and used a string level on our chalk line and snapped a line level at 54” high, then another line where we wanted the top to be. We numbered the post took each one back out and drilled strait through the center of each post on our drill press using the chalk line as our horizontal center point. We used the next size up forstner bit from the actual pole size to give a bit of wiggle room. We then drilled a series of 3/8” holes in each post space 16” apart starting at 12” from the ground. This is where we ran our wire through to attach the vines as they grow up to the main pole. We cut the post to length and set the post back into the ground. With some extra hands we went ahead and slid the pole through the tops, drilled through the end post and bolted them, after we had the end post plumb, we plumbed the center post and drilled and bolted it.

We set the post with just a little bit of concrete just to fill the post hole, plus we only needed to go down around 2’. With this system all the tension is held by the pipe at the top, so we didn’t need to attack it with a 3’ deep hole and several bags of concrete. That was our first clue that we were really going to really like this approach, a lot less work! To add a bit of fancy to the project we purchased the ball tops and screwed them into the top of each post. After the post cured we ran our wire through the holes having the pole across the top keeps the post solid, thus we were able to really stretch the wire without worry of pulling the post inward.

We started our grapes and carefully nurtured them as they grew to the top. We choose Muscadine Grapes as we know someone living in the Florida panhandle suggested them. They have much of the same climate as we do in central coastal Texas, and have tried several of the varieties from up North with no success, except for the Muscadine, with that said where you live will have a lot to do with the varieties that do well in your climate.

Well with all this work we thought we were ready to cash in on a great grape crop, nope after they started to really mature about five years ago, the same old story, they came on strong and then just shriveled up like a pea and dropped off. We have them in the irrigation system so we knew they were getting plenty of water. We did notice that we were getting a fungus on the leaves and would spray but that didn’t really help either.

As we drove through Texas we would always admire the wonderful grape vineyards and wondered just what the secret was that we were missing. As we began to look closer we noticed there were no leaves up to around 4’ from the ground. At first we thought this was just because the plants were more mature. We went home and peeled off all our leaves that were close to the ground and kept new growth from coming out at that level. We also fertilized the plants and to our surprise the fungus went away the plants filled out the grapes came on stayed and we had a great crop that year. This year will mark our 3rd year with a strong crop of grapes. Last year off four plants spreading across that 20’ section we were able to harvest enough grapes to make jelly and nearly five gallons of wine.

In total it has been eight years since we planted our grapes, the support is still as plumb and straight as the day we installed it, and it appears it will be that way for some time. We are really sold on this system, as for what made the grapes finally take off, we are not sure which has more benefit the removal of the leaves or the fertilizer but we plan to keep a good thing going. Hope this helps someone else having the same problems with their grapes.
Greene County, Mo., Circuit Judge Daniel Imhoff recently threw out a lawsuit against Armand Bechard, a farmer who sells raw milk to customers in the Springfield area. According to the judge, Bechard was not the proper subject of the lawsuit, and the statute of limitations prevents any further action in the case, so Bechard is free to resume business as usual.

It all started back in April 2009 when undercover agents tricked Bechard's daughters into selling them raw milk. On its most basic level the federal deficit is the difference between current government spending (including interest payments) and total current revenue from all types of taxes.

In 2001, when President George Bush took office, our debt was around $6.5 trillion. Combined with President Obama’s spending packages and commitments, our public and gross debt over the last 10 years has more than doubled.

But that’s not the scary part. What’s scary is how much money we owe when we look at current and future liabilities over the course of the next three decades. Officially, this figure is estimated to be around $150 trillion. Unofficially, according to Boston University economist Laurence Kotlikoff, our future liabilities exceed some $200 trillion. Considering that the tax revenue of the United States is around $4 trillion per year, anyone who’s ever held a balance and made a credit card payment can understand the near impossibility of paying off such a debt.

Senator Tom Coburn is one of many who warns of dire consequences if we can’t get our finances under control:

I think you’ll see a 15 to 18 percent unemployment rate . I think you will see an 8 to 9 percent decline in GDP. I think you’ll see the middle class just destroyed if we don’t do this. And the people that it will harm the most will be the poorest of the poor, because we’ll print money to try to debase our currency and get out of it and what you will see is hyperinflation.

If we don’t take some pain now, we’re going to experience apocalyptic pain, and it’s going to be out of our control. The idea should be that we control it.

We share Senator Coburn’s sentiment. Unfortunately, we’re not as optimistic as he is that any of Congress’ placations will be sufficient enough to help us get out of this hole.

With $4 trillion in annual tax revenue, at today’s debt levels it would literally take 50 years just to pay off the debt that we’ve already committed to - that’s if we stopped all additional spending right now - today. The odds of that are zero - thus our debt liability will continue to grow, as will the interest payments required to service our debt.

The end result of our pulling forward 25 - 50 years of debt is not going to be pretty. As we’ve outlined before, we are on the brink of a catastrophic collapse in the credit of the United States of America. This means that at some point our national credit card is going to be maxed out.

When that will be is difficult to predict. According to Senator Coburn, we’re looking at about 3 - 4 years - which sounds like a viable time line. Really, it all depends on China, because they are the largest buyer of US debt.

But the Chinese are not going to stand by while their US currency reserves become worthless. They are already taking action to counter the effects of a soon-to-be suicided US dollar.

We recently learned that the Chinese have signed agreements with the Russians to drop the dollar as a settlement vehicle, essentially replacing the world’s reserve currency with the Yuan when dealing with each other. We’ve heard many people suggest that this is just a drop in the bucket because of the widespread use of the US dollar - and we agree. However, China is working with other trade partners to do the same thing. And eventually all of those drops in the bucket will fill it up.

Once the Chinese pull the plug there will be only one entity left to support the US dollar - The Federal Reserve. They’ll digitally print trillions of dollars for as long as they can, but sooner rather than later the US dollar will collapse.

And when it does, the end result can only be described as an economic apocalypse.

If the dollar gets to the point it is equivalent to Monopoly money it will be impossible for holders of the bills, as well as our government, to settle transactions with the currency. This means that commerce on a global scale, for all of those expecting to fulfill transactions in US dollars, will come to a standstill.

How will individuals and governments buy food, gas, and other essential goods when the very currency being used to settle the transaction is no longer a viable trade instrument?

Really, it can get that bad. We have no confidence that Congress, the President, the Federal Reserve or US Treasury can fix this problem.

Over the course of the next decade we will see a new US monetary system introduced - just like we saw in 1971, 1944, 1913 and 1785.

This time it will be very disorderly. We can expect trillions in wealth to be wiped out and the many complications that come along with such an event - violence, protests, riots, breakdown in the rule of law and potentially even large-scale war.

If you haven’t done so already, take action to protect your wealth and preserve your well being now, before it hits the fan. Many have speculated that the reference to the four popular herbs was due to their use in Medieval Europe to help cleanse the air and ward off the infamous black plague. Others have thought that the reference to the four herbs was because the combination may have been used as a love potion. Whatever the reason for their inclusion in the popular song, the many health benefits of parsley and sage are worth loving and singing praises about in their own rights.

PARSLEY

Parsley is an amazing medicinal herb with a world of health benefits. The root contains calcium, B-complex vitamins, and iron, which nourish the glands that help regulate the uptake of calcium. It is a source of magnesium, calcium, potassium, vitamin A, beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin K.

Among the many benefits reported for parsley are:

*It is a diuretic which helps the body produce more urine to keep the urinary system operating smoothly and which helps prevent problems such as kidney stones and bladder infections.

*It is wonderful for removing toxins from the body, such as heavy metals.

*It is an effective breath freshener. It is believed that the practice of including parsley on a dinner plate began due to its breath freshening abilities and not merely for its decorative effect.

*The root and leaves are good for the liver and spleen.

*It helps relieve bloating during menstruation.

*It provides relief for edema, often helping when other remedies have failed

*Parsley root and seeds help relax stiff joints, often making stiff and unmanageable fingers work again.

*It helps remove gallstones when used properly by taking a pint of the tea daily.

*It is beneficial for the adrenal glands.

*It is a powerful therapeutic aid for the optic nerves, brain and sympathetic nervous system.

*Parsley juice is an excellent tonic for the blood vessels.

Note: It is best to avoid large amounts of parsley if you are pregnant, especially the use of the volatile essential oil.

SAGE

Like rosemary, its sister herb in the mint (Labiatae) family, sage contains a variety of volatile oils, flavonoids and phenolic acids, including rosmarinic acid. The oils found in sage are both antiseptic and antibiotic, helping it fight infections.

Besides the antioxidant and other properties shared with Rosemary, sage`s other health benefits include:

*It is effective for symptoms of menopause, night sweats and hot flashes because of its estrogenic action and because its tannins help dry up perspiration.

*Sage helps provide better brain function and has been used in the treatment of cerebrovascular disease for over a thousand years. It helps provide better recall and research has suggested that it may be an effective option to help treat Alzheimer`s.

*There`s also compelling evidence that sage may be of value to people with diabetes for whom the hormone insulin does not work as efficiently as it should. Lab studies indicate that sage may boost insulin`s action.

* The ability of sage to protect oils from oxidation has also led some companies to experiment with sage as a natural antioxidant additive for cooking oils that can extend shelf life and help avoid rancidity.

In an upcoming article, we will also sing the praises of the other two herbs mentioned in the popular song - rosemary and thyme.

Sources included:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarbo...
http://www.healthy-holistic-living....
http://www.greenmuze.com/blogs/natu...
http://www.buzzle.com/articles/pars...

About the author
Tony Isaacs, is a natural health author, advocate and researcher who hosts The Best Years in Life website for baby boomers and others wishing to avoid prescription drugs and mainstream managed illness and live longer, healthier and happier lives naturally. I see we are picking more and more followers and am I excited . Many of you know I try and keep my posts pretty simple and i do this for two reasons . First is i live by the rule K.I.S.S -keep is simple stupid. and second is time mine and yours.
So on with todays post is a rehash of an old one prepping in every day life. Man life is as fast paced as ever and well we at home have come up with a few things that help us prep and not command our lives.

First is how we cook ...........

We never make less than a gal and a 1/4 of pasta sauce

When we make brisket we cook the whole thing not just half .We do this because we can the left overs. its simple and easy and theres less waste this way .It takes around an hr and a half to can right so after we eat we can whats left and while it's in the presser canner we clean up dinner dishes and spend some family time . Because sitting there watching the little bobber spit off steam is point less you will know if some thing is wrong by the noise it makes ,,

so keep it simple and on the cheap prep on my friends --maddog--

------------------------------------------
Join the APN Forum at www.AmericanPreppersNetwork.net
Visit the Missouri Forum at www.MissouriPreppersNetwork.net
MADDOGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15749541264349786367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8877614051352128455.post-68317598335456373552010-09-08T19:58:00.000-07:002010-09-08T20:22:18.035-07:00What to dokeep calm don't panic . Breath in out in out . now take stock what is the problem? am i in danger? can i handle what needs done? if the answer is no to the last leave walk a way no sham no fault you will just be in the way. There is no shame in knowing your limits . no blame or fault . when i was younger a lot younger i took part in several search and rescues including a child birth in a place called the bambi lodge in green meadows ca. i have helped carry out two bodys one dead one alive no problem . so when the child birth thing came up i was gun ho i have see death and can over come that fear lets rock. i have seen a man cleaved in half been covered in someone elces blood no problem lets do lunch so child birth is a walk in the park right? WRONG wrong wrong i went in gun ho and was carried out on a stretcher with a huge knot on my head . there is no sight to compare with the birth of a human baby and the smell i fainted like a weee school lass . i didn't attend the birth of my children tryed with the first and was helped out of the room and placed on 02 till my color returned . i felt small here i have seen blood and guts death . yet i have delivered animal baby's no prob . i have a limit and birth is it . so the doc came to me when i was felling my lowest and explained that she has seen nurses pass out we are all diffrent and we should know are limits . just a little advice get to now your limmits be safe ---maddog--
----------------------------------------
Join the APN Forum at www.AmericanPreppersNetwork.net
Visit the Missouri Forum at www.MissouriPreppersNetwork.net
MADDOGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15749541264349786367noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8877614051352128455.post-63133407083048052232010-09-07T20:16:00.000-07:002010-09-07T21:20:52.987-07:00BUGGING OUT FOR HARD TIMES I have been plagued as of late of the thought of bugging out for economic reason's and have come up with the idea that its not just a good idea its a great idea. As the economic woes pile up as preppers we need a plan . And leaving you money sucking mchome behind makes sence. If i was unable to work i have aflack ( money well spent i have used it before and what they pay is no great sum 1400 a month we made due. now if for some reason i cant work i;e illness they pay me but this time I'm bugging out. I have done the figures and me my wife and our son . my daughters are over 18 and gone off on there own. we could travel the us with one truck and our trailer and live well on about 900 a month 7 if we live cheap that means i would be able to save between 500-700 a month. travel with the seasons to different parts of america and lead a pretty normal life . there would be some changes . we are in the process of turning all our media on to terabite potable drives i;e music and movies . i have a small wasted space in the trailer i;v designed and will install an onboard computer system . the case your computer comes in is for there ease of manufacturer not use so the metal case is not needed and we would still have our laptops but the on board system would be 110 ac or 12 vt dc through a 300 watt inverter all hard mounted in the wasted space and shielded. I'm installing an extra water tank and have 5 propane bottles around xmas i will replace the old stove with a new one (289) and have plans for 2 solar panels on the roof under 1/2 in lexan for protection. we bought a h&h 12 ga and have shortened the barrel to 20 inches . it has a hard mount in the trailer i have added a corbra 25 cb with weather channels and hope to add a shortwave just after xmas . we have a 1800 watt geni with 12 volt for power and a 12 volt fridge i use in my truck it only holds 48 qts.

Some key points i need to point out are A place long forgotten by the people who lived a life of hard times and rugged independence far from the sounds of the city . Yet there stands there testament to life in the desert southwest of El Paso , TX . a city has sprung up around it . Yet there it sits a top a small knoll over looking the progress of man . Silent it still tells the tell of time past . Of sun and sand and maybe love . I took this photo on Aug 7th 2010 in Santa Teresa ,NM behind on of our plants (tyson) i asked why it was spared and no one knew .But there it sits bold as day right behind a multi million dollar factory . left untouched and standing as a testament to what end ????????--maddog

------------------------------------------
Join the APN Forum at www.AmericanPreppersNetwork.net
Visit the Missouri Forum at www.MissouriPreppersNetwork.netMADDOGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15749541264349786367noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8877614051352128455.post-71919635461904602452010-08-09T08:23:00.000-07:002010-08-09T08:29:44.231-07:00A Couple of Chicken Coop OptionsIf you live in town or even in the country and don't want to put up a big chicken house, there are a couple of options to consider.
