Take a Sip, Order Seeds, and Read for Preparedness Pleasure
This is my first post for the Missouri Preppers Network. You’ll see a link to my regular blog, DestinySurvival.com, on the sidebar here. My thanks to Maddog and American Trucker for allowing me to contribute here.
I thought I’d start out with something light in nature, partly because I want to promote a Missouri publication and seed company.
If you’re living the self reliant life and want to do as much of your own food and beverage production as possible, there’s an article in the Fall 2009 issue of “The Heirloom Gardener” magazine I think you’ll find of interest. I know some are into home brewing for beer and wine, but this isn’t about that. The article I refer to is “Making Your Own Soda Pop” on pages 20-24 and describes the process for making your own syrups from fruits and herbs.
I personally drink soda pop rarely and stay away completely from diet soda because of the harmful aspartame it contains. However, a root beer or orange drink is a treat now and then. Barbara Berst Adams, author of the soda pop article suggests making soda pop from strawberries, pears, peaches, or even rose petals, to name a few. You’ll use a lot less sugar than conventional soda pop, and you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing it’s the real deal.
Granted, this isn’t a preparedness necessity, but it can be lots of fun for children. Just as when I suggested on my own blog last summer that it would be a good idea to buy an ice cream freezer, making your own soda pop can be a morale booster in the midst of deprivation.
There’s much more to “The Heirloom Gardener” which I think you would really enjoy. Very little of their content is online, but a print subscription is only a few dollars per year. The magazine is produced with numerous beautiful, colorful photographs, and you won’t be blitzed with advertisements.
As the name suggests, articles are about gardening with heirloom or heritage plants and seeds, such as tomatoes, beans, herbs, and flowers. There’s a brief news section up front on what’s happening in the world of Frankenfoods—genetically modified seeds and foods. Historical profiles of individuals are sometimes featured, such as founders of old seed companies. The current issue profiles the Missouri Botanical Gardens in St. Louis.
I recommend getting a subscription to “The Heirloom Gardener” for yourself, or get a gift subscription for someone you know who’s into survival gardening. You can check out the magazine’s site and subscribe at http://www.theheirloomgardener.com .
“The Heirloom Gardener” is published by the folks at Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds in Mansfield, MO, which specializes in heirloom seeds. Their catalog, like the magazine, is quite colorful and interesting. I buy a little something from them every year. I particularly like their selection of black-eyed peas, though they’re big into melons from Asia, lots of tomatoes, and a whole lot more. If you’re into gardening at all, you know it’s never too early to start thinking about next year’s garden. Check out Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds at http://www.rareseeds.com . You’ll be glad you did.

FIRST FROST
I AWOKE TODAY TO THE FIRST FROST OF FALL. A SLIGHT CHILL FILLED THE AIR IN THE HOUSE. AS I SCURRED FROM UNDER THE COVER'S AND HEADED TO THE WOOD STOVE. NURSEING THE COALS TO LIFE THE SMELL OF WOOD SMOKE IN THE AIR . SOON I HADE A FIRE BREATHED BACK TO LIFE I SCAMPERD OFF TO THE KITCHEN TO BREW THE MORNING NECTOR OF LIFE . LOOKING OUT THE LARGE WINDOW APON THE FIELD'S COVERED WITH THE WHITE OF FROST. I PARTAKE IN THE TIME HONORED SCENE ......CUP IN HAND I SIT DOWN TO TYPE . IF THE WORLD COULD SEE WHAT I SEE THERE WOULD BE NO WAR'S JUST THE WONDERMENT OF NATURE AND ALL SHE HAS TO OFFER. WITH THE FIRST FROST THE TREE'S HERE IN THE VALLEY WILL TURN AND EXPLODE WITH THE COLOR OF FALL. THE BURNT AMBER'S , THE ORNAGE AND RED FLAMES WILL COVER THE TREE'S .AND ALL IS WELL FOR NOT ALL CHANGE IS CONTROLED BY MAN. NATURE WILL REMIND US WE ARE JUST STEWARDS OF THIS LAND . LEAVES ARE FALLING LIKE RAIN COVERING THE EARTH WITH A CARPET OF COLOR. SO ENJOY LIFE . BASK IN THE GLOW OF THE CHANGING OF THE SEASON. ............PEACE TO MY FRIENDS SLEEPLESS NITES TO MY FOE'S ..........MADDOG...

HUNTING TIME
THE TIME HAS COME ONCE MORE. HUNTING SEASON DEER , RABBIT , SQUIRREL OR OTHER GAME. I WOULD LIKE TO STRESS ONE OF MY PET PEEVES --SAFETY -- A SAFE HUNT IS A GREAT HUNT YOU CAN'T HIT THE RESET BUTTON AND BRING BACK A FRIEND OR LOVED ONE BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO BE RAMBO OF THE WOODS AND ARE JUST TO COOL. EACH YEAR WE HERE ABOUT A HUNTER BEING INJURED BECAUSE SOMEONE WAS CARELESS SO LET'S BE SAFE THIS AND EVERY YEAR.
NOW AS FOR ME I'M PLANING A SQUIRREL HUNT IN THE MORNING A COUPLE OF BUSHY TAILS WILL MAKE FOR A FINE MEAL. I WILL USE MY MARLIN MOD 60SS WITH A 4X SCOPE SHOOTING CCI SOLIDS OR BULK FEDERAL AMMO. BOTH TYPES OF AMMO WORK WELL ON BUSHY'S. I PERFER SOLIDS OVER HOLLOW POINTS FOR SMALL GAME .
LET ME SET THE TONE FOR YOU ALL DEER CAMP --------- HOW MANY HRS HAVE YOU SPENT WITH FRIENDS SITTING AROUND THE FIRE ? STOOTING THE BREEZE TALKING ABOUT NOTHING. MANY FORGET THAT THE KILL IS NOT THE MOST SATAFING PART OF HUNTING. FOR ME IT'S THE HUNT AND TIME SPENT OF FIELD. I ENJOY THE MEAT PROVIDED BY THE HUNT BUT IF I DONT BAG MY LIMIT MY WORLD DOSN'T END. I STILL HAVE THE EXPERENCE OF THE TIME SPENT A FIELD.
THAT I CAN REVISIT AT ANY TIME .
I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE ONE OF THEM HUNTS WITH YOU. THE YEAR EARLY 90'S . THE LOCATION CALIFORINA . THE PREY A LARGE MULE DEER I SPOTED EARLYER IN THE YEAR WHILE COON HUNTING . WE I MEAN ME AND MY BEST FRIEND BOBBY HAVE BEEN AFIELD FOR 6 DAYS WE HAVE SEEN SOME IMPRESIVE ANIMAL'S. BOBBY FILLED HIS TAG ON DAY 4 TOOK US DAMB NEAR 6 HRS TO PACK THAT BIG SOB OUT OF THE WOODS. WE HAVE SNOW COMMING DOWN AND WERE TRAKING THE BIG FELLOW NEVER HAD A DEER COVER SO MUCH COUNTRY BUT THIS GUY WAS ON THE MOVE . NOT DOWN TO THE LOW LAND BUT HIGHER INTO THE SERRIA NEVADA'S WE CLIMB WELL ABOVE 6500 FT THE HR IS LATE AFTERNOON AND THEM PACKS ARE GETTING HEAVY WERE A GOOD 11 MILES AS THE CROW FLY'S TO THE TRUCK BUT HAVE COVERED 15 OR MORE . OL BOBBY SUGGEST WE CUT OVER TO BAMBI LODGE A SMALL INN IN THE MIDLE OF NO WERE A PLACE CALLED GREEN MEADOWS A 12 ACRE PLOT OF THE MOST BEATAFULL MOUTAIN MEADOW ALONG DEER CREEK AT THE 6000FT LEVEL AS A MAN HAS EVER SEEN. WELL WE CUT DUE EAST OVER THE RIDGE AND JUST BEFORE SUNSET WE MAKE IT COLD TIRED AND HUNGRY. WE COULD HAVE MADE CAMP WERE WE STOOD BUT THAT WARM RUN DOWN LODGE WAS TO MUCH TO PASS UP. THIS PLACE WAS SMALL 4 ROOMS ONLY AND ALL WERE FILLED WITH OTHER HUNTER'S. SO AFTER ONE OF THE BEST MEAL'S I HAVE EVER EATEN AND A QUICK SHOWER WE MADE OUR BEDS OUT ON THE LARGE WOOD FLOOR OF THE MAIN ROOM THAT ACTED AS SITTING ,DINING AND MEETING ROOM WITH A LARGE STONE FIREPLACE AND DRANK COFFEE AND BS'ED TILL AFTER NIDNITE WITH THE OTHERS BEDING DOWN JUST LIKE US. COME MORNING WE ATE A HARTY MEAL AND SET OUT AFTER OUR GOOD BY'S . WE WERE JUST ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MEADOW WHEN WE SPOTED THE BIG FELLOW COMMING OUT OF THE TREE LINE . WE SPOTED EACH OTHER ABOUT THE SAME TIME THERE I STAND RIFLE UP HIM IN THE CROSSHAIRS AND HYIM JUST LOOKING BACK AT ME . I SWEAR HE WOULD HAVE SCORED 240 B&C OR BETTER THERE WE STOOD LOOKING AT EACH OTHER ALL I WOULD NEEDED TO HAVE DONE WAS TWITCHED AND THE BIG 300 WEATHERBY WOULD HAVE DROPED HIM LIKE A HAMMER AT LESS THAN 150 YARDS . AND TO THIS DAY I DONT KNOW WHY7 I DIDN'T PULL THE TRIGGER BUT I DIDN'T . HE CALMLY WALKED BACK INTO THE TREE LINE AND ME AND BOBBY WENT BACK TO THE LODGE AND CALLLED MY GRANDPA TO COME GET US . WHILE WE WAITED WE RECOUNTED THE HUNT 2 DAYS 20 MILES OR SO AND A HUNT THAT WILL REMAIN WITH ME TILL THE DAY I DIE. NEVER SEEN THAT BIG BUCK AGINE FIGURED SOMEONE ELCE BAGED HIM I HOPE NOT BECAUSE WITH OUT HIM THER WOULD HAVE BEEN NO HUNT NO MEMORIES TO RECALL . IN MY MIND I HOPE HE LIVED A LONG LONG LIFE AND SIRED MANY A DEER.........AS AL WAYS MADDOG.......
