THE TIME HAS COME ONCE MORE. HUNTING SEASON DEER , RABBIT , SQUIRREL OR OTHER GAME. I WOULD LIKE TO STRESS ONE OF MY PET PEEVES --SAFETY -- A SAFE HUNT IS A GREAT HUNT YOU CAN'T HIT THE RESET BUTTON AND BRING BACK A FRIEND OR LOVED ONE BECAUSE YOU WANTED TO BE RAMBO OF THE WOODS AND ARE JUST TO COOL. EACH YEAR WE HERE ABOUT A HUNTER BEING INJURED BECAUSE SOMEONE WAS CARELESS SO LET'S BE SAFE THIS AND EVERY YEAR.
NOW AS FOR ME I'M PLANING A SQUIRREL HUNT IN THE MORNING A COUPLE OF BUSHY TAILS WILL MAKE FOR A FINE MEAL. I WILL USE MY MARLIN MOD 60SS WITH A 4X SCOPE SHOOTING CCI SOLIDS OR BULK FEDERAL AMMO. BOTH TYPES OF AMMO WORK WELL ON BUSHY'S. I PERFER SOLIDS OVER HOLLOW POINTS FOR SMALL GAME .
LET ME SET THE TONE FOR YOU ALL DEER CAMP --------- HOW MANY HRS HAVE YOU SPENT WITH FRIENDS SITTING AROUND THE FIRE ? STOOTING THE BREEZE TALKING ABOUT NOTHING. MANY FORGET THAT THE KILL IS NOT THE MOST SATAFING PART OF HUNTING. FOR ME IT'S THE HUNT AND TIME SPENT OF FIELD. I ENJOY THE MEAT PROVIDED BY THE HUNT BUT IF I DONT BAG MY LIMIT MY WORLD DOSN'T END. I STILL HAVE THE EXPERENCE OF THE TIME SPENT A FIELD.
THAT I CAN REVISIT AT ANY TIME .
I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE ONE OF THEM HUNTS WITH YOU. THE YEAR EARLY 90'S . THE LOCATION CALIFORINA . THE PREY A LARGE MULE DEER I SPOTED EARLYER IN THE YEAR WHILE COON HUNTING . WE I MEAN ME AND MY BEST FRIEND BOBBY HAVE BEEN AFIELD FOR 6 DAYS WE HAVE SEEN SOME IMPRESIVE ANIMAL'S. BOBBY FILLED HIS TAG ON DAY 4 TOOK US DAMB NEAR 6 HRS TO PACK THAT BIG SOB OUT OF THE WOODS. WE HAVE SNOW COMMING DOWN AND WERE TRAKING THE BIG FELLOW NEVER HAD A DEER COVER SO MUCH COUNTRY BUT THIS GUY WAS ON THE MOVE . NOT DOWN TO THE LOW LAND BUT HIGHER INTO THE SERRIA NEVADA'S WE CLIMB WELL ABOVE 6500 FT THE HR IS LATE AFTERNOON AND THEM PACKS ARE GETTING HEAVY WERE A GOOD 11 MILES AS THE CROW FLY'S TO THE TRUCK BUT HAVE COVERED 15 OR MORE . OL BOBBY SUGGEST WE CUT OVER TO BAMBI LODGE A SMALL INN IN THE MIDLE OF NO WERE A PLACE CALLED GREEN MEADOWS A 12 ACRE PLOT OF THE MOST BEATAFULL MOUTAIN MEADOW ALONG DEER CREEK AT THE 6000FT LEVEL AS A MAN HAS EVER SEEN. WELL WE CUT DUE EAST OVER THE RIDGE AND JUST BEFORE SUNSET WE MAKE IT COLD TIRED AND HUNGRY. WE COULD HAVE MADE CAMP WERE WE STOOD BUT THAT WARM RUN DOWN LODGE WAS TO MUCH TO PASS UP. THIS PLACE WAS SMALL 4 ROOMS ONLY AND ALL WERE FILLED WITH OTHER HUNTER'S. SO AFTER ONE OF THE BEST MEAL'S I HAVE EVER EATEN AND A QUICK SHOWER WE MADE OUR BEDS OUT ON THE LARGE WOOD FLOOR OF THE MAIN ROOM THAT ACTED AS SITTING ,DINING AND MEETING ROOM WITH A LARGE STONE FIREPLACE AND DRANK COFFEE AND BS'ED TILL AFTER NIDNITE WITH THE OTHERS BEDING DOWN JUST LIKE US. COME MORNING WE ATE A HARTY MEAL AND SET OUT AFTER OUR GOOD BY'S . WE WERE JUST ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MEADOW WHEN WE SPOTED THE BIG FELLOW COMMING OUT OF THE TREE LINE . WE SPOTED EACH OTHER ABOUT THE SAME TIME THERE I STAND RIFLE UP HIM IN THE CROSSHAIRS AND HYIM JUST LOOKING BACK AT ME . I SWEAR HE WOULD HAVE SCORED 240 B&C OR BETTER THERE WE STOOD LOOKING AT EACH OTHER ALL I WOULD NEEDED TO HAVE DONE WAS TWITCHED AND THE BIG 300 WEATHERBY WOULD HAVE DROPED HIM LIKE A HAMMER AT LESS THAN 150 YARDS . AND TO THIS DAY I DONT KNOW WHY7 I DIDN'T PULL THE TRIGGER BUT I DIDN'T . HE CALMLY WALKED BACK INTO THE TREE LINE AND ME AND BOBBY WENT BACK TO THE LODGE AND CALLLED MY GRANDPA TO COME GET US . WHILE WE WAITED WE RECOUNTED THE HUNT 2 DAYS 20 MILES OR SO AND A HUNT THAT WILL REMAIN WITH ME TILL THE DAY I DIE. NEVER SEEN THAT BIG BUCK AGINE FIGURED SOMEONE ELCE BAGED HIM I HOPE NOT BECAUSE WITH OUT HIM THER WOULD HAVE BEEN NO HUNT NO MEMORIES TO RECALL . IN MY MIND I HOPE HE LIVED A LONG LONG LIFE AND SIRED MANY A DEER.........AS AL WAYS MADDOG.......

Great post....I've never been a good shot, but loved hunting. Funnest part was just hanging out with the guys, grandpa, dad, uncles and friends all around the campfire everynite. And I gotta admit, we always ate much better out hunting than when we did at home....always brought the best food along with us.
Ah the hunting stories of past hunts. Food for the soul. My dad always made me hunt squirrel with a single shot 22. Said if you can't take a head shot don't shoot. We never wasted any meat. Still hunt them the same way. I know my dad would be proud.
Maddog - this post brought back so many fond memories for me - thank you! My Dad and his buddies took me and my sister hunting on a few occasions - my sister and i only had BB guns (i got to use a few different types of weapons during my military career but have never fired a shotgun - crazy eh?). But we got to experience what it was like to go out hunting with the men and always participated in stripping and wrapping the meat.
Anyway, long story short, my hubby and i will be hunting on our newly-purchased acreage in the middle of some of the best hunting grounds in Cape Breton Island (deer, moose, rabbit like you never saw!)
Thanks for such a great post - i am really enjoying these!
