RIMFIRE OR CENTERFIRE

JOEL THE K ASKED WHAT IS THE DIFFRENCE BETWEEN THE TWO SO IN RESPONSE I THOUGHT I WOULD MAKE A GOOD POST . SO JOEL HERE YOU ARE.

THE DIFFRENCE IS THAT IN A RIMFIRE ROUND THE FIREING PIN STRIKES THE EDGE OR RIM OF THE CASE . AS WERE THE CENTERFIRE STRIKES THE PRIMER IN THE CENTER . IN OTHER WORD BOTH ROUNDS HAVE A PRIMER JUST IN DIFFRENT LOCATIONS . PRIMERS ARE WHAT INGITE THE POWDER IN THE CASE . HERE IS WHAT THE PRIMER CONTAINES . THE FIRST PRIMER WERE MADE OF MERCERY FULMINATE AND WAS USED IN BLACK POWDER MUSKETS BUT MADE BRASS CASES BRITTLE.THEY REPLACED THAT WITH POTASSIOM CHLORATE VERY DIRTY AND CORROSIVE. THEN SOME TIME AROUND THE 30'S-40'S THEY CAME UP WITH LEAD STYPHNATE AND IT'S STILL IN USE TO DAY IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER IT'S VERY UNIVERSAL.

NOW THE CASE IS WHAT SET'S THE TWO APART IN THE .22LR YOU WILL NOTICE THAT THERE IS NO PRIMER POCKET .THE WHOLE RIM OF THE CASE IS THE PRIMER . (RIMFIRE CASES ARE NONRELOADABLE) YOU WILL ALSO NOTICE ON A SAY 38 SPECAL ROUND THAT IN THE CENTER OF THE BACK OF THE CASE THERE IS A PRIMER . YOU CAN SEE WERE THE PRIMER IS SEPREAT FROM THE CASE. THESE ROUNDS ARE GENRALY RELOADABLE.

THERE ARE TWO DIFFRENT CASE TYPE'S RIMED AND RIMLESS THE EASYEST WAY I CAN EXPLAINE IT IS TAKE THE .45 ACP IS A RIMLESS CASE AND A CENTERFIRE ROUND AND THE .45LC IS A RIMED CASE ALSO CENTER FIRE. IN TO DAYS MORDERN FIREARMS ALL BUT A FEW ARE CENTERFIRE EXCEPT ANY GUN CHAMBERD FOR THE .22SHORT .22LONG .22 LONGRIFLE . THE ARE SOME OLD RIMFIRE GUNS OUTTHERE BUT WERE MOSTLY PRE1900.

I HOPE THIS WAS A HELP TO YOU IF YOU HAVE ANY MORE QUESTIONS I'L BE MORE THEN HAPPY TO ANSWER.--AS ALWAYS KEEP YOUR POWDER DRY--MADDOG--
